Be An Accredited Carbon-Conscious Website

Boost your site's eco-credentials in three steps! Trim website’s emissions to less than 1 gram of CO2 per page view, adopt hosting powered by renewable energy, and lower your organisation's carbon footprint by more than your website's yearly emissions or supporting high-integrity nature projects. Finally, display your accreditation logo with pride.

How accreditation works

Eco-Friendly Web Alliance (EFWA) has set the standard for carbon-conscious websites.
Eco Friendly

1. Measure

Get started with a free audit of your website that goes beyond just the home page. We'll do a comprehensive audit of your site and even check if it's hosted using green energy.
Eco Friendly

2. Act

Keep the web pages averaging under 1 gramme of carbon per page view. Use green-hosting and take responsibility for website’s carbon footprint based on annual page views.
Eco Friendly

3. Inspire

Display the Accreditation logo on your website. Inspire others.

Questions about carbon-conscious website accreditation
How long will process take?
It really depends on how quickly you make the necessary changes to meet the standard. Some meet the required standard within a week and it may typically take between 1-4 weeks. Talk to our team if you need any further guidance.
What is the cost of accreditation?
As a means of ensuring that accreditation fees are as inclusive as possible, our accreditation fees are scaled according to the revenue of the organisation. For the latest fees, please contact us. Concessions are available for registered charities, state educational institutions, select public agencies, environmental groups, and small businesses.
How long is the accreditation for?
1-3 years. Before your current accreditation expires, you can get started on the next accreditation cycle. We will work with you to make sure everything is in place so that your accreditation doesn’t expire between cycles.
What's the minimum recommended level of carbon per page?
A minimum level of 1 gram of carbon is considered achievable for most existing websites and serves as a practical starting point for carbon reduction efforts. EFWA plans to introduce a new grading system aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of websites further than that.
What if the website is not green-hosted?
Choosing a green host that runs entirely on renewable energy can substantially reduce your website's emissions. With a green host, you can cut a website's carbon footprint by about 9%. As part of the accreditation process, if your website is hosted on regular servers or even on green hosting that isn't officially recognised, an extra 10% is added into website’s yearly carbon emissions to be taken responsibility for. If you're considering a new hosting provider, the Green Web Foundation's database is an excellent starting point. Just remember, we don't offer hosting services ourselves.
How can I take responsibility for my website's carbon?
Taking responsibility for your website's carbon emissions is easy. You can go beyond the actual carbon footprint for the year for the website. Achieve below-zero emissions for your website, through insetting or high-integrity, science-backed project marketplace of nature-based solutions that remove carbon, restore biodiversity and improve livelihoods. You may opt to do so directly or we take care of this for you as part of the accreditation.
